If you're over the age of 55 and are looking for a home surrounded by countless golf courses and the convenience of not having to drive your car everywhere, look no further. I happen to love The Villages but unfortunately I cannot move there for another 15 years. In order to live here, you cannot have children under the age of 19 in your household. Children are allowed to visit for a total of 30 days per year. I love the convenience of having everything within distance and not having to use a vehicle to get to places. Everyone that lives here has a golf cart and not just any golf cart. I have seen golf carts completely hooked up in terms of having A/C or looking like a 1950's roadster. The Villages continues to grow on a daily basis, they are constantly building new businesses to accomodate the residents. They have countless supermarkets, restaurants and shopping options. The Villages offers homes that range from simple and affordable to mansions for the wealthy. Every Village has a gate that is controlled by a central security system. The more expensive neighborhoods have a guard at the gate that will clear your entry after resident approval. The Villages is located off US 301 and the property is so big that it covers three different counties: Sumter, Lake & Marion. The easiest way to get here is to take the Florida Turnpike north to US 301 (last exit on Turnpike), take US 301 north to 466 and turn right. In order to navigate through the many neighborhoods and entertaiment squares, I would suggest a GPS because it can get confusing.

I visited friend who are living in The Villages (Hemingway). They have a very nice home with an open floor plan on the golf course (tees going away from their home). Because of the layout it seems much bigger than it is. We were told that you cannot buy a new home if you're under 55 but there are no restrictions for owners selling their homes. There are also families here which I found odd since I thought children were not allowed. But there is also a charter school... I visited at the beginning of October. A lot of snow birds were having their homes readied for their return. I hear things get really busy after mid-October. We spent a week attending the many free concerts and events held nightly in the the different "villages" as well as just carting around the different villages getting familiar with the area. I felt like I was riding on the Autotopia ride in Disneyland. It's a very convenient driving everywhere in a golf cart. You don't need to wander out of the villages for anything. It's a small town in it's own right. All kinds of grocery stores, pharmacies, dining establishments, hospital, medical facilities, community centers, swimming pools, archery range, bocce ball court, schools, etc. Lots of activities. One person commented "if there isn't a club for something you're interested in, just start one and people will join." It's a gated community, of sorts. There are gates there but you can enter by pushing a button. The gates seem to be there primarily so cars entering the complex have to stop and are more aware of the many golf carts crossing or sharing the roads. There are areas that only golf carts can access. There's even golf cart parking etiquette... cute. It's a very lively place where older folks don't need to "act their age" ... they can do whatever they feel like and don't have to explain. The only down side is the lack of diversity and that it's located in Florida. I suppose I could live there during the cooler months and flee during the summer... a snow bird of sorts but for different reasons.

838 Furman Loop found at TheVillages4Rent.com I rented this house in The Villages for a month. Buyer beware! You must send the owner full amount, sight unseen based on what the owner publishes about her home. In this case, the "new" home had shoddy , uncomfortable furnishings (including all 3 beds!) Our 35 year old child stayed for one night in the master bedroom and woke up with a backache. Dust and dirt were found under the beds, as well as the couch cushions. TVs provided were small and old. Knives in the kitchen were serrated and looked like they came from a garage sale. Had to spend $150 at Bed, Bath and Beyond for kitchen towels and other items. The "home office" consisted of a cheap table, next to the front door that wiggled when you touched it. My husband had to tighten the screws on it before we could put our laptop on it. Have rented before in The Villages with no problems.

40 years from now, I WILL be retired here. This is literally a retirement paradise. Everything is within golf cart range. Clubs and activities every night of the day. Beautiful architecture and landscaping everywhere. Friendly people. Etc. Etc. Literally, the perfect place to retire.

Not a fan of The Villages. We RV full time and do go to restaurants in the area along with Sam's Club etc. at first it seems like a great idea. They have every kind of activity imaginable especially if you golf. It's all included in the HOA fees. My concern is that you literally put you life into jeopardy by driving in the area. GOLF CARTS DO NOT STOP FOR NOTHING. I mean nothing. The people want to get there & get there very fast. Most every golf course, restaurant and every market is filled to capacity, especially if they have a sale. If you like really crowded, this is the place for you.
